Modi Reciprocates to Trump’s Praise
Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday, 6th Sept, 2025, described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great Prime Minister and friend,” even as trade tensions and tariff disagreements continue to stir debate. Trump’s remarks, widely reported in international media, reflect the personal rapport the two leaders shared during his presidency.
Now, Narendra Modi on Saturday, 7th Sept 2025, has responded back Donald Trump's "always be friends" remark, saying he "fully reciprocates his sentiments".
PM Modi wrote on X — "Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump's sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership".
At the White House, on September 6, 2025, US President Donald Trump made the following significant statements on the India-US relationship: "I will always be friends with Modi, he is a great Prime Minister” "India and the United States have a special relationship. There is nothing to worry about. Trade talks with India are going well.”
The Tariff Dispute Context
The praise comes at a time when the tariff row between India and the United States remains a talking point. Under Trump’s tenure, Washington pushed for greater market access in India, while New Delhi defended its right to protect domestic industries. Even with differences, both sides highlighted areas of cooperation, ranging from defence and energy to technology and counterterrorism.
In recent weeks, India–U.S. relations have come under strain after the Trump administration introduced secondary tariffs on India over its continued purchase of Russian oil. With the new measures, tariffs on Indian exports have crossed 50%. New Delhi strongly criticised the decision, labelling it “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”
Looking Forward
Modi’s response reflects his trademark diplomatic balance—welcoming goodwill while standing firm on policy. As India–U.S. relations evolve under new global challenges, the ability to blend personal connections with pragmatic politics will remain key in shaping the partnership between the world’s largest democracies.
