The trouble started weeks before the competition. In late October 2024, the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) appointed Mario Búcaro as its new CEO, replacing Anne Jakrajutatip. Reports soon surfaced of disagreements between the MUO and Thai franchise director Nawat Itsaragrisil over event management and sponsorship control, hinting at growing friction behind the scenes.

On November 3, 2025, during a live sashing ceremony, Nawat publicly confronted Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, for allegedly refusing a photo shoot with a sponsor. In a shocking turn, he called her a “dummy” and ordered security to remove her. Bosch responded calmly but firmly: “We respect you, just as you should respect us.” The moment, captured on camera, spread across social media within minutes.

Outraged by the public humiliation, dozens of contestants — including reigning Miss Universe Victoria Kjær Theilvig — walked out in solidarity.
