Trump Calls India a Dead Economy

In a provocative statement, Former U.S. President Donald Trump has ignited controversy by calling India a “dead economy” while announcing a 25% tariff on Indian imports, set to take effect from today, August 1, 2025. The statement, made via his Truth Social platform, linked India’s economic trajectory to its growing ties with Russia, stating, “They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.”

  Escalates Trade & Political Tensions

This unexpected jibe has drawn sharp responses from Indian political leaders. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal firmly dismissed the claim, reiterating that India is the fastest-growing major economy in the world. He emphasized that India continues to post robust GDP growth, projected at around 6.2–6.5% for FY2025, despite global challenges.

The political fallout intensified as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appeared to endorse Trump’s comment, a stance that drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders who accused him of belittling India’s economic progress and damaging its global standing.

Trump’s announcement also included a punitive clause aimed at nations like India and Russia over their deepening economic and defence ties. Economists caution that the tariffs may impact Indian exports by up to $10 billion, affecting key industries such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and auto components.

Despite Trump’s criticism, India’s economy remains resilient, with strong domestic consumption and growing investor confidence. While the rhetoric may heighten diplomatic tensions, experts believe India’s economic fundamentals and strategic diversification efforts will help it weather any immediate shocks.

The episode highlights the delicate balance of international trade and diplomacy amid rising geopolitical tensions.
