18 Dead in Bilaspur, Himachal Landslide Bus Accident:

A devastating landslide struck Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district on Tuesday evening, claiming the lives of at least 18 people. The private bus, carrying approximately 30 to 35 passengers, was en route from Rohtak in Haryana to Ghumarwin, near Bilaspur, when a section of a hill collapsed due to relentless rainfall, burying the vehicle under debris near the Bhallu Bridge in the Bhalughat area.

Ongoing Rescue Operations

Emergency crews, including National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, rushed to the site. Rescue efforts continued through the night with machinery and local support teams trying to retrieve trapped passengers. So far, three people, including children, have been rescued and taken to a nearby hospital in Berthin. Local MLA Jeet Ram Katwal also visited the site to monitor operations.

Leaders Express Grief and Support

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and announced compensation of ₹2 lakh each for the deceased's families and ₹50,000 for the injured. "My thoughts are with the affected families. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured," said a PMO statement.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu described the event as a "massive tragedy" and is personally coordinating with officials. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and President Droupadi Murmu also extended condolences and assured full support for rescue and relief operations.

Continuous Rain Raises Concerns

The Bilaspur region has been experiencing heavy rainfall since Monday, raising the risk of further landslides. Authorities have urged travellers and residents to remain alert as rescue teams continue to search for survivors under the rubble.

This tragic incident once again highlights the vulnerability of hilly regions to landslides during the monsoon and underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures on mountain routes.
