Heavy rains in Mumbai - 18th Aug 2025
Mumbai experienced another day of heavy rainfall on Monday, August 18, which nearly brought the city to a standstill. The downpour caused severe waterlogging, extensive traffic congestion, and widespread disruptions, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges on Tuesday, August 19.
Rainfall Data Reveals Severity
Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed that several areas of the city—such as Vikhroli, Chembur, Juhu, and Santacruz—received over 120 mm of rain within 24 hours. Flooding affected low-lying regions, such as Andheri, Khar, Vakola, and King’s Circle, the most severely, prompting authorities to close subways and divert traffic. Meanwhile, delays in local train and bus services left commuters struggling to reach their destinations.
BMC Orders Closure of Schools and Colleges
Prioritising student safety, the BMC confirmed the closure of educational institutions across Mumbai. The decision followed the IMD’s red alert warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods in certain parts of the city.
Emergency Teams Step In
Emergency services, including the police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were deployed to assist affected areas. Amid the chaos, one positive development was Tulsi Lake overflowing after the heavy showers, easing concerns over the city’s water supply.
Authorities Urge Caution Amid Heavy Rainfall
With the IMD forecasting more rainfall throughout the week, authorities have urged citizens to limit outdoor travel, stay indoors where possible, and remain alert to official advisories. Safety, they emphasised, must stay the top priority during these intense monsoon spells.
