25 June- 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'

On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Prime Minister Modi and top BJP leaders, including Amit Shah, JP Nadda, and Harsh Malhotra, strongly criticised the Congress, calling the 1975 Emergency a direct attack on democracy. The Modi government has declared June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to remind the nation’s youth of what and why it's called the darkest period in India's democratic history and highlight the importance of upholding constitutional democracy.

Today, on 25th June 2025, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that henceforth, June 25 will be observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas every year, in remembrance of the constitutional crisis during the Emergency period led by Indira Gandhi of the Congress Party.

Across India, including Delhi and other regions, BJP leaders and allied ministers, such as Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, are participating in events labelled under this name. They are organising programs, from stadium events to awareness campaigns nationwide, reminding the nation's younger generations about the constitutional violations that occurred during that period.

PM Modi’s Tweets

Calling the Emergency 'one of the darkest chapters' in India's democratic history on its 50th anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that no Indian will ever forget how the spirit of the Constitution was violated during the Emergency, as he affirmed his government's commitment to strengthening constitutional principles.

In a series of posts on X,Modi tweeted

Today marks fifty years since one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history, the imposition of the Emergency. The people of India mark this day as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. On this day, the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution were set aside, fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was extinguished, and several political leaders, social workers, students and ordinary citizens were jailed. It was as if the Congress Government in power at that time placed democracy under arrest.

Why this matters—

The Emergency period from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, saw suspension of civil liberties, press censorship, imprisonment of opposition figures, and aggressive constitutional amendments by Congress’s Indira Gandhi—hence the BJP is framing the event as a “murder” of constitutional values.

Opposition from the opposition party

Congress's Priyanka Gandhi slams the BJP-led NDA over 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas', calling it 'negative politics'.

Priyanka said, “It comes as no surprise that people who repeatedly attacked the spirit of the Constitution and democracy through their decisions and actions would take part in the 'negative politics' of commemorating 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'.”

Further, in response to the 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' declaration, the main opposition party labelled June 4 as 'Modi Mukti Diwas', recalling the day when the BJP fell short of the majority mark during the Lok Sabha elections, though the NDA secured a third consecutive term with 293 seats.
