The Review

Heads of State is a high-octane action-comedy that serves up a mix of political suspense, global espionage, and whip-smart humour. Written and directed by Ilya Naishuller and starring Idris Elba and John Cena, the film brings together two disparate operatives from different countries on an around-the-world adventure to prevent an international threat. Elba's dry, detached presence is played for laughs against Cena's boorish, hyperactive intensity, and the odd couple camaraderie between them provides much of the movie's humour.

The story, though not original, is quick-moving and loaded with high-octane set pieces, stylish choreography, and so many twists that they won't have time to let the film put them to sleep. The movie embraces its own ridiculousness with awareness, including satirical barbs at global politics and at the spy genre itself. There are supporting performances of quality, especially from the ensemble of diplomats, baddies, and bureaucrats.

Visually, Heads of State is sleek, featuring nice cinematography and a rich international look. It doesn't break the action-comedy mould, but as a popcorn film, it gets the job done, striking a good balance between humour and thrills. Lovers of movies like The Hitman's Bodyguard or Red Notice will recognise familiar delights here. All things considered, it's a hoot, a whirl, and a belly laugh that doesn't get too serious.
